Companions for

Travelers with Disabilities

Traveling can be a great way to see the world and experience new cultures. However, it can also be a challenge for people with disabilities. While one may have the proper accommodations to fulfill everyday tasks at home, going somewhere new can propose unique issues. Some conditions that can limit one’s ability to travel solo can include:

Paraplegia or other mobility conditions

Vision or Hearing Impairments

Mental Health Conditions

Genetic or Acquired Conditions

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Is a Travel Companion Right For You?

Some reasons those with disabilities may be considering a travel companion include:

  • Convenience: While you’re able to pack and get through a huge airport on your own, it can be significantly more tiring with a disability. We are dedicated to assisting individuals affected by mobility, vision, hearing or any other disability, to travel comfortably and with ease. A companion can help with tasks such as packing, carrying luggage, and getting around large spaces or areas with tough terrain.
  • Peace of Mind: Traveling can be stressful and overwhelming, especially when there are additional variables to be concerned about. “Will the seat be wide enough?” “Will I be overstimulated at the airport?” Our concierge services help plan each part of the journey including ensuring the proper accommodations are provided, and your companion is there to assist with anything else, including emotional support.
  • Independence: Living with a condition that the world is not optimized to serve can have a significant impact on one’s ability to feel independent and supported at the same time. We have perfected the balancing act of allowing our clients to do things independently when they want to, and stepping in to help when they need it. Our goal is to give you freedom in your travel experience while still offering support on standby.
  • Medical Assistance: Having a travel companion who is knowledgeable in medical care can be beneficial, even more-so when you are faced with unpredictable conditions that can affect your disability. Medical equipment can go on the fritz, meltdowns or trauma responses can occur, blood sugar drops or spikes can happen, or any number of other situations. Our certified travel companions and CNAs are always close by to keep your medication schedule on track and respond to any medical situations that may occur.

With a travel buddy provided by Golden Years, the journey will feel just like traveling with a trusted friend (who also happens to have medical expertise), making the trip a more enjoyable and fulfilling experience.

Making Travel Accessible

As travel companions, we want our clients to feel like they’re accompanied by a friend, not a nurse. By prioritizing the emotional need for self-sufficiency, they can explore new places and visit familiar ones feeling free while still having the benefits of having that medical support on standby throughout their journey.
